Signs of spring in the job market

Three and a half years on from the credit crunch, the job market may still seem stuck in the doldrums.

But look closer among the statistics and there are tentative signs of spring.

• Recent data from the OECD suggests that the economic outlook is improving and the UK is now at a potential turning point. Job “churn” is keeping the employment market busy and big corporate players like Tesco, Pret a Manger, Starbucks, Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover are all announcing job creation.
• Companies are sitting on huge cash reserves.  Once confidence improves, they should start to invest again, creating jobs, stimulating demand and getting the economy back on track.
• Of course, we aren’t out of the woods yet.  The turmoil in the Eurozone could yet turn nasty, and the outlook for graduates remains particularly tough.

But if you’re determined, tenacious and take the trouble to pitch yourself right, opportunities exist. We’re at the beginning of a slow upward curve.
