Changing Careers: What you Need to Know

Many people think about career change, but few do anything about it. Surveys show that the top five reasons for wanting a career change are:

  • To do the job you "always wanted to do" but didn't for some reason (family pressure, no money to study, fear of failure etc)

  • Unhappiness with your current career (thinking that another career would have more benefits or fewer drawbacks than your current career)

  • Wanting a different lifestyle (eg an office worker wants to be outdoors, or to travel more)

  • Dissatisfaction with your material rewards (looking for a more highly paid career)

  • To get more independence and "fire your boss", perhaps even start your own business

Whatever your reasons, and they may be a combination of the above (or even none of the above!), if you find yourself thinking about career change a lot, you owe it to yourself to explore it properly.

At CareerBalance we have helped hundreds of people make successful career changes. More importantly, we know about all the pitfalls, and can advise you on whether you have a realistic chance of success, or whether it would be better to continue in your current career. We find that even in the latter case, a client feels much better for having seriously considered the option before deciding against it.

If you do decide to take the plunge, we have a full range of support services available, from finding out exactly what you really like doing by analysing your past work experience, isolating your transferable skills that you will use in your new career, and even using our contacts to get you meetings with senior people in your chosen field.

Please send us a brief summary of your career situation, and attach a copy of your CV. We will then get in touch to let you know if we can help.
