This year CareerBalance is making a donation to the mental health charity Mind instead of posting out Xmas cards.
In the UK one in four people will experience a mental health problem every year. Mental ill-health is thought to be responsible for 91 million lost working days each year, more than for any other illness. Recent estimates put the cost to UK employers at £30 billion each year.
In the City of London, the international nature of work in many organisations means that you may be working across different time zones. Long hours, demanding workloads and competition in the work place can also be triggers for stress, anxiety and depression.
Fortunately, much more help is available to individuals who are suffering from mental health problems. There is now a much greater acknowledgement, awareness and understanding of mental health issues in the work place. Many employers have more effective assistance in place for individuals who are suffering from depression, stress or anxiety.
Under a statutory duty to promote better health and well-being for its working population, the Corporation of London set up the Business Healthy initiative in 2014. They run regular events, and their web site is a useful source of information for both employers and employees: https://www.businesshealthy.org
The web site of the mental health charity Mind is also an excellent resource for those seeking advice, guidance and research on mental health issues. See: http://www.mind.org.uk
We wish our staff, our clients and you a happy and healthy 2016.
